LAST CALL FOR BIDS TO REVITALISE NEW FERRY SHOPPING AREA

18 August 2011

Businesses, social enterprises and community groups wanting to raise their profile or launch a new service at the heart of local communities, have until 9 September to make an application for grant support from the Empty Shops Fund.

All parts of Wirral are covered, with each of the Council’s 11 Area Forums having £17,500 (plus an additional £17,500 per centre for Bromborough, New Ferry and King Street/Brighton Street) to help bring new life to their local shopping areas.

The funding can be used towards a wide range of projects that lead to the re-use of empty shops, including:

  • A contribution to the start-up cost for a business, including fit-out, equipment and running costs (rent, insurance, utilities etc)

  • Temporary ‘pop up’ shops for voluntary organisations, community groups or charities

  • Decorating empty shop windows with vinyl graphics to promote your events, facilities or campaign messages

  • Craft fairs, exhibitions or information centres

  • Local artist groups using an empty shop to run ‘artist in residence’ activities for schools and the local community.

The owners of properties used in the scheme could also benefit from a three month ‘break’ from full rates when a temporary lease ends, which could be a major incentive for many landlords.

More information and application forms can be viewed on the Wirral Council website at: www.wirral.gov.uk/funding

Applications are being accepted from now until 9 September this year. -
