NEW PUFFIN CROSSING TO LINK NEW FERRY WITH PORT SUNLIGHT

25 January 2013

After many years of waiting, New Ferry and Port Sunlight are finally to be linked with a new "Puffin" pedestrian crossing at the junction of Boundary Road and Bebington Road.

This important crossing point has been a nightmare for many residents trying to cross the road between Port Sunlight  village and New Ferry district centre.

A request for a crossing at this point has been made several times over the years by New Ferry Residents Association who included it in their first Action Plan in 2000 shortly after the group was set up and consulted with residents.  The Council's Highways Department had previously turned requests for a light-controlled crossing down, saying that the junction was too busy and that there was no money to fund it.

Despite those previous answers, the Council has now agreed to install a crossing at this location.  Workmen will begin work towards the end of February.

Mark Anthony Craig, Chair of NeFRA says: "This is welcome news for New Ferry.  For many years, residents - particularly elderly residents of Port Sunlight - have said how unsafe they have felt whilst crossing the road at this busy point.  I'm sure they will now feel much safer, and the crossing will encourage more people to come to shop in New Ferry at a time when the local traders need as many customers as possible."

The installation should be completed towards the end of March.
