SEWER COLLAPSE CLOSES NEW FERRY ROAD

22 November 2014

Motorists will be well aware that New Ferry Road has been closed to traffic near its junction with New Chester Road due to a sewer collapse.  Contractors working on repairing the sewer admitted today that it will be "several days" before the road reopens due to another collapse taking place close to the first.

Drivers have been inconvenienced by the collapse, and are having to divert around the Dell and Proctor Road, the ONLY other route for traffic to exit the riverfront area.

The problem has been caused by the age of the brick built Victorian sewer which sits some 15 feet below the middle of the road.  Over time, mortar in the joints between the bricks break down and is washed away by rainwater percolating through from the surface, and - with the weight of large vehicles passing over it - the weakened brickwork collapses into the sewer itself.
