"INTO THE LIGHT" - AN EVENT TO MARK THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF THE EXPLOSION

17 March 2019

25th March 2019 will be the second anniversary of the devastating explosion which tore through the centre of New Ferry, reducing buildings to rubble, injuring over 80 people, and tearing homes and businesses apart.

However, despite government indifference, the community has stood together and helped each other through the dark times of despair brought on by displacement into temporary accommodation, losing possessions of sentimental value that cannot be replaced, losing jobs and livelihoods, reduced takings due to drastically reduced footfall, recurring nightmares, etc.  To top all of that, the government response has been disappointing, and the court case regarding the explosion has had to go to a retrial when the jury could not reach a verdict.
New Ferry and the neighbouring community of Port Sunlight have been through so much together - but perhaps happier times are around the corner with 2.45 million about to be spent on the community's regeneration.

In order to put the bad memories behind it, the two communities are coming together on the evening of Monday 25th March 2019 - the anniversary night of the explosion itself - to host an event in the heart of their smashed town.  Called "Into the Light", it will be an evening starting at 6.45pm with a lantern parade through the pedestrianised section of Bebington Road led by the Bebington Sovereign Majorettes.

The parade will end up at the former bowling green at Circular Drive/Boundary Road on the edge of Port Sunlight Village where it will be greeted by the Wirral Sign Choir performing on a stage which will be surrounded with the lanterns from the parade. This will be followed by singing from Grove Street School (New Ferry) Choir and Church Drive School (Port Sunlight) Choir, poetry readings by local actor (and still displaced resident) Christopher Power.  The event will be compered by Radio Merseyside presenter Roger Phillips.

The communities of New Ferry and Port Sunlight welcome anyone who would like to attend the evening to witness one of the greatest examples of a community pulling together and now looking forward to a new and brighter future.
